Vedic remedies: a practical guide

Gemstones, mantras, charity and dasha remedies: what they are for and what they cannot do.

Remedies · 7 min read

Remedies are one of the most misunderstood parts of Vedic astrology. They are traditional practices for attention, discipline and service. They are not a transaction that buys a better future, and they are not a substitute for medical, legal or financial care.

What a remedy is for

A remedy is a repeated practice that helps a person meet a planetary theme with more steadiness. A mantra, a charity, a fast or a discipline can all function this way. The value is in the repetition and the intention, not in the price of an object.

In the kundli report, remedies are tied to the ascendant lord, the Moon-sign lord, the current dasha lord and the traditional doshas. They are suggestions to consider, not instructions that override your judgment.

Gemstones: proceed carefully

Gemstones are traditionally assigned to planets. A ruby for the Sun, a pearl for the Moon, a red coral for Mars and so on. But a gemstone is not automatically suitable for everyone, and wearing one is not a substitute for addressing the actual issue.

Consult a qualified astrologer before buying an expensive stone. Be sceptical of anyone who creates fear and then offers a costly object as the only solution. A useful practice should be affordable, repeatable and safe.

Mantra, charity and conduct

Mantras are traditionally recited quietly and consistently. A short daily practice is usually more sustainable than a large occasional one. Charity is traditionally matched to the planet, but the amount is not the point; the regularity and the sincerity are.

Conduct is the least glamorous remedy and often the most useful: keeping promises, treating people fairly, paying attention to the people already in front of you. A chart reading that ignores conduct has missed the point.

Dasha-specific remedies

A dasha remedy is a practice for the planet currently setting the season. It is not a way to cancel the dasha. The report may suggest a mantra, a day, a charity or a discipline tied to the current dasha lord.

Read the dasha first as a theme. If Saturn is the dasha lord, the useful question is not 'how do I make Saturn go away?' but 'where is Saturn asking for patience, structure and a realistic commitment?'

The fear test

A responsible remedy should leave you calmer and more capable. If a reading leaves you frightened, rushed or dependent on one person, stop. Fear is a warning sign, not proof of accuracy.

No remedy replaces medical treatment, legal advice, financial planning or the work of a relationship. Use remedies as a small practice alongside ordinary life. The chart is one input.

  • Does the remedy have a clear, repeatable action?
  • Is it affordable and safe for you?
  • Does it increase your agency rather than your fear?
  • Is anyone pressuring you to buy something expensive?
